CDMX registers rise in prices of grocery products: Sedeco


During the first fortnight of April, the difficult inflationary panorama in the prices of food products continued in Mexico City, reported the Secretariat of Economic Development (Sedeco).

Sedeco’s Basic Basket Monitoring report considers the prices of a total of 30 products, based on two cost categories (low and high), as well as four supply channels – self-service stores, markets on wheels, markets public and the Central de Abasto–.

In the first 15 days of April, part of the 30 products increased their prices annually in the supermarket category, in the high and low cost range.

For example, among the largest increases, in the low price range, the lemon with seed stands out with an increase of 206%, which went from 22.80 pesos in the first half of April 2021 to 69.90 pesos in the same period of 2022.

Other products that have had increases are cucumber with 173.25% (from 9.70 to 26.50 pesos), onion ball with 84.34% (from 24.90 to 45.90 pesos) and Italian zucchini with 99.4% (from 16.50 to 32.90 pesos).

In the high price range of supermarkets, there were also increases in the kilo of seed lemon, which increased annually 207.4% (from 24.40 to 75 pesos), cucumber with 136.7% (from 13.90 to 32.90 pesos) and the ball onion with 136.1% (16.90 to 39.90 pesos).

Behavior

As the months have progressed this year, the products evaluated by Sedeco have kept their prices on the rise.

Just look at the low price category of the supermarket supply channel; In the first fortnight of January, a kilo of beef tenderloin steak was priced at 184 pesos, this cost was maintained in the first fifteen days of February and March, but in April it fluctuated at 189 pesos.

In the high price category, this product presented the same behavior, in the first fortnight of January, as well as in the first 15 days of February, the price was 204 pesos, but for the first fortnight of March and April it was 206.5 pesos. .

In the same category of low prices in supermarkets, the kilo of Hass avocado has increased, since it was sold in January and February for 68 pesos, in March for 85 pesos and in April for 97.90 pesos.

Another product that stands out is the kilo of guava in the category of low prices in supermarkets because its price remained at 32.90 pesos in the first fortnights of January, February and March, but by April it reached 39.90 pesos.

The cost of a kilo of golden apples also stands out, in the low price category, which has maintained the same price as in January, 49.90; in 2020 the average price was 20 pesos.

According to the Mexico platform, How are we doing? Inflation during this first fortnight of April has not been generated homogeneously in the country.

The states with the highest annual inflation in the first half of April 2022 were Campeche (9.8%), Oaxaca (9.0%), Michoacán (8.9%), Zacatecas (8.8%) and Baja California (8.7 percent).

While the states with the lowest inflation are Mexico City (6.4%), Querétaro (6.6%), Tabasco (6.7%), Baja California Sur (6.9%) and the State of Mexico (7.0 percent).

Despite the fact that Mexico City is the entity with the lowest inflation rate, the effects of rising prices continue to impact consumers’ pockets.
