CDC Director Acknowledges Confusion Over Booster Vaccine Messages

The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Rochelle Walensky, acknowledged that messages from her agency and the Joe Biden administration have generated confusion among doctors and patients about when and who should receive injections of booster vaccines against COVID-19.

The context: In an interview with CBS’s “Face the Nation,” host Margaret Brennan pointed out the apparent disconnect between Biden’s comments, who has suggested that most Americans should receive reinforcement, and recommendations from US health agencies. Walensky said about it: “I recognize that confusion.”

  • Last Friday, Biden told reporters that they are analyzing when they will be able to expand booster injections “across the board.”
  • However, a CDC advisory panel recommended last week that the third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine be available only to older Americans and those with underlying conditions.
  • Walensky dismissed the advisory panel’s recommendation and expanded eligibility for people whose jobs put them at higher risk for COVID-19.

And now that? The FDA’s vaccine office came under new leadership, amid growing tensions over booster vaccines and an increased workload.

  • In an email to staff, Peter Marks, director of the Center for Biological Research and Assessment, said that as of Monday he assumed the role of interim director of the office.
