CCE Puebla warns of lag in the recovery of jobs lost due to the pandemic

Puebla, Pue. The Business Coordinating Council (CCE) admitted that 2021 will be negative in the recovery of jobs, because the 23,995 that were lost, especially in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will not be recovered, despite the total reopening of activities since mid-October.

Ignacio Alarcón Rodríguez Pacheco, president of the organization, said that some sectors such as business and services, including restaurants, have been recovering between 1,000 and 2,000 jobs continuously since last month, which coincides with the decrease in the number of infections that allowed operations to resume at 100 percent.

However, they are insufficient, he said, because since the beginning of the year, the goal was to recover 50%, especially in the two aforementioned areas.

He indicated that it is not about good intentions, “but about accepting the reality that we still have, which is a slow recovery of the economy and employers are only hiring according to the needs of each one.”

He commented that, according to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), only 15,177 jobs have been recovered of the 39,172 that were lost in 2020 due to the pandemic, that is, 23,995 are missing, but the conditions do not exist to achieve that number at the end of this year.

Rodríguez Pacheco indicated that in the sectors textiles, restaurateur, hotelier, entertainment and the countryside there is a lag in job creation and companies are not sure of investing in the final stretch, because they also have the payment of Christmas bonuses at the door.

He acknowledged that the expectations of economic recovery have not been met and some partners also classify this year as lost, because sales are recovering slowly.

The good end

Regarding the start of El Buen Fin, on Wednesday, November 10, he stated that it can help in the sales of certain sectors, but it does not mean a recovery of the local economy, since in a month they cannot sell the rest of the year either.

He estimated that of the 23,995 jobs still to be recovered, they would only achieve a total of 6,000 in the remainder of November and early December, because after that date, no one opens vacancies and they leave it until February, since they miss the January slope.
