For the second time this year, a Mario game has set the record for the highest price paid at auction for a video game.
November 20th Heritage auctions sold a rare and sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 since the 1990s for $ 156,000 USD (approximately $ 203,998 CAD). That beat the previous record set in July 2020 when that game's predecessor in 1985, Super Mario Bros., sold for $ 114,000 USD (about $ 149,076 CAD).
Heritage Auctions notes that the bidding opened at $ 62,500 USD, which was already an impressive amount for a game rated Wata 9.2 A +. But 20 bidders rushed up, pushing bids to the record final price.
