More Than 100 Drivers Die During Utah’s 100 Deadliest Days

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Utah Highway Patrol and the Utah Department of Transportation on Wednesday released this year’s report on the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer. Officials said 102 people died on Utah’s roads in the months between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. The number is similar to numbers over the last decade, but it is up significantly from last year when only 61 people died in the same period. UHP said that while there were fewer commuters than usual this summer, there were more people on the road for family trips. “There was kind of a magnifying glass put on some of those behavioral issues that people have behind the wheel,” said UHP Sgt. Nick Street. “Like not buckling up, motorcyclists not wearing a helmet. A lot of people unfortunately lost the...

CLEARFIELD, Utah – The Utah Highway Patrol has reported increased speeding and reckless driving through a construction zone in Davis County. It’s the same area where three construction workers were injured after an impaired driver came barreling through the construction zone. UHP is focusing on speed enforcement in the area, and troopers are reminding the public of the repercussions for not following road rules – especially in construction zones. Authorities said the changing layouts of projects is one reason to drive the posted speed limit and be extra aware. “We have had people plow into the lane splits and barrels there, weave in and out of traffic,” said John Gleason, spokesperson for the Utah Department of Transportation. “At the heart of this it is not just ab...

UHP Adding Extra Patrols For Fourth Of July Weekend

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Officials with the Utah Highway Patrol said drivers hitting the road this Fourth of July weekend will see extra state troopers on Utah’s roads. They’re focused on getting drunk drivers off the road, and putting the brakes on aggressive driving. Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic cut down the number of cars on the road, state troopers have seen a surge in triple-digit speeders. “The roads have been less traveled. So they’re more open,” said trooper Michael Gordon. Not long after the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order went into effect in March, troopers started pulling over more drivers for speeding. “An extreme increase of vehicles traveling at excessive rates of speed,” said Gordon.Under COVID-19 restrictions, interstate traffic was initially cut in...
