Google camera update eliminates astrophotography on ultra-wide cameras

Since the Pixel 4 arrived, Google's line of smartphones has offered an 'astrophotography' feature that takes advantage of machine learning techniques and computational photography to take pictures of the night sky. With the launch of the Pixel 5 and 4a 5G in 2020, new ultra-wide camera hardware enabled Pixel owners to take wider images of the night sky. However, it appears that Google has since removed that ability. As seen by 9to5Google, Pixel 5 and 4a 5G owners can no longer access astrophotography when using the ultra-wide camera on their devices. Starting with the Camera 8.1 update, a small bubble appears on the screen indicating that users should "Zoom to 1x for astrophotography". Despite the change, the ultra-wide camera s...

New Pixel 5 and 4a 5G features including connectivity and adaptive sound

Along with Google Pixel security updates, Google has released several new features for the Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5. The last Pixel feature drop we saw was in September in conjunction with the release of Android 11. The first of the two features is 'Adaptive Sound', which goes hand in hand with Adaptive Battery and Adaptive Brightness. Adaptive Sound uses the phone's microphone to pick up sounds near you so it can automatically tune the audio from the speaker. The example Google offers where Adaptive Sound can come in handy is when traveling from your quiet home to a noisy city. The feature is also available on Pixel Buds (2020), Google's recently released wireless earbuds. Adaptive Sounds works on the device, and the audio from...

Bell offers Google Nest Hub for free with Pixel 5 purchase through November 30

It seems that Bell was not happy with the already insane offer it had on Google's latest flagship, the Pixel 5. The carrier is now offering a free Google Nest Hub with the purchase of a Pixel 5 until November 30. Bell, along with several Canadian carriers, put the Pixel 5 up for sale for an incredible $ 0 down payment and $ 20 monthly device financing (or something very similar for those who don't offer device financing). Within 24 months, that means customers pay a total of $ 480 for a phone with a value of $ 799. No matter how good the deal, this weekend Bell will increase the offer by including a free Nest Hub with Pixel 5. The offer is available to both new and existing customers while supplies last and is available both in-st...

Several Canadian carriers offer Pixel 5 for $ 480, roughly $ 320 in savings

Black Friday deals from various carriers launched this week, but Red Flag Offers (RFD) highlighted one offering in particular that is great for Pixel fans. Fido it currently offers the Google Pixel 5 for a $ 0 down payment with a $ 20 per month financing. On the surface, it doesn't seem like such a crazy deal. However, when you total the cost, that means you're paying $ 480 over two years for the $ 799 Pixel 5. What makes the deal even sweeter is that Fido lists the full price of the Pixel 5 at $ 950 and typically charges a monthly financing fee of $ 39.59 (around $ 950 for two years). You don't just get the Pixel 5 cheaper than the total price of $ 799 charged by the Google Store, you're saving even more than what Fido would no...

Some Pixel 5 users have noticed problems with the volume level

Unfortunately, Google smartphones are rarely released without at least a few issues. The most recent concern with the Pixel 5 posted on Google Support Forums refers to the volume level control of the smartphone. There are reportedly two problems, with some users noticing that the volume level drops randomly when watching video content. Second, some users also noticed a massive increase in system volume levels affecting notification tones, touch sounds, clicks on screenshots, and other system sounds. Also, using the volume controls and sliders does not fix the problem. These reports have started to appear in mid-October, but have increased after more people started using the device. Google is aware of the volume issues and gave t...

What is your favorite smartphone that launched this year in Canada?

In 2020, several companies released various phones that varied in features and prices, including smartphones from Samsung, Apple, LG, and Google. This year we have Samsung's Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, Galaxy S20 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 2, Apple's iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, as well as LG's V60 ThinQ, Velvet, OnePlus' 8 Pro and 8T, Huawei's P40 Pro, Google Pixel. 5 and many more. I'd say my favorite flagship this year is the Pixel 5 or Samsung's Galaxy S20 +. However, the LG Velvet features a great design, and the Galaxy Z Fold 2 (which I haven't worked with yet) offers what some reviewers have said might be the best foldable smartphone experience yet. Now that we are reaching the end of the year and we do not expect to see any more ...

Pixel 5 activates reverse wireless charging automatically when plugged in

Although we know that the Google Pixel 5 has a handy reverse wireless charging feature, a support page has revealed that the phone can automatically turn it on when plugged in. A Google support page seen by 9to5Google describes the feature, a part of the Pixel 5's 'Battery Share' wireless charging capability, which can turn the phone into a makeshift wireless charger. Basically, when you connect the Pixel 5 to a USB-C charger, the phone automatically turns on Battery Share. The first time this happens, the phone will display a notification to inform users. Although the notification won't appear afterwards, the feature will still be activated when you connect the Pixel 5. Also, the feature seems to have a bit of intelligence built...

Google says pixel 5 screen gaps are ‘normal part of design’

Google has responded to reports from some customers that they noticed a small gap between the screen and the frame of their Pixel 5, which the tech giant says is normal. A 'Community Specialist' from Google responded to a thread on a support page and said the tech giant investigated the affected units and "can confirm that the variation in free space between the body and the screen is a normal part of your Pixel 5 design." The tech giant has also confirmed that there is no effect on the water and dust resistance or functionality of the device. The specialist notes that Google "will work with customers individually to address any concerns they may have." User reports have indicated that there is a variation between Pixel 5 devices w...

This Pixel 5 teardown shows wireless charging work and more

The last Pixel 5 teardown video to connect to the internet shows how Google was able to make the aluminum-framed smartphone work with Qi wireless charging and a few other quirks. Another new addition is a series of plastic clips on the inside of the screen to hold the screen to the rest of the phone. 9to5Google notes that some Pixel 4 units experienced issues with the back panel peeling off, so it seems these clips are another measure to help hold the device together in case the adhesive wears off. The only thing connected to the screen is a vibration motor that acts as the earpiece speaker below the screen, but beyond that, almost everything else is connected to the main chassis of the phone.Once the screen is removed, you can s...
