President Donald Trump on Thursday ordered a radical but unspecified ban on deals with Chinese owners of consumer apps TikTok and WeChat, though it remains unclear if he has the legal authority to actually ban apps from the U.S.
The twin executive orders, one for each application, take effect in 45 days. They say they are necessary because China's proprietary applications "threaten the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the United States," and they ask the Secretary of Commerce to define the prohibited deals at the time.
