Car that entered the Niagara River is no longer visible after passing through the falls – Hamilton | The Canadian News

US authorities say the removal of a car that entered the Niagara River on Wednesday was suspended after it passed over the falls last weekend.

The New York State Parks (NYSP) say they lost site of the vehicle after a “wind event” Saturday swept the vehicle underwater.

“The vehicle was last seen by State Park police patrols around 9pm Saturday, after which the water level rose so high that the vehicle was no longer visible,” said a NYSP spokesperson, Brian Nearing, a Global News.

“By dawn, the water level had dropped and the vehicle had disappeared from the edge of the falls.”

The park authority said officials are still monitoring the waterway for debris that may pose a hazard.

“We will assess removal if we make eye contact with the car,” Nearing said.

NYSP says a woman died after the car sank in the Niagara River on the morning of Dec. 8 on the US side of the falls, not far from Goat Island, just before noon.

A United States Coast Guard helicopter and a rescue swimmer were able to recover the body of a woman in her 60s.

The investigation into the reason why the driver got into the river is still ongoing. Police do not believe the incident is suspicious in nature.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has determined that there has been minimal environmental impact and there is no indication of a release to the environment.
