Cancun Airport maintains growth trend


Cancun, QR. The Southeast Airport Group (Asur) reported that in the first quarter of the year the Cancun International Airport exceeded the flow of passengers by 8.4% compared to 2019.

In Mexico, the group transported 12.9 million passengers, an increase of 70.5% in the year-on-year comparison, and exceeding the passenger traffic of 2019 by 5.8%.

In the domestic segment, Asur served a total of 5.25 million passengers, with Cancun being the airport that concentrated the most traffic, with 2.93 million. Internationally, 7.14 million travelers were received, of which 6.72 million used the Cancun air terminal, a figure that represents 7.3% more than in 2019.

Only in April, the Cancun airport mobilized 853,177 passengers, a figure that represents 14.5% more than the same month of 2019. While in the international segment it was reported that 1.76 million users were mobilized through this air terminal, a figure 17.0% higher at the pre-pandemic level.

In the same month, but at the Cozumel airport, the mobilization of 10,243 passengers was registered, a figure lower than the 11,906 a year earlier.

Grupo Asur operates the concession of nine air terminals in Mexico: Cancún, Cozumel, Huatulco, Mérida, Minatitlán, Oaxaca, Tapachula, Veracruz and Villahermosa, with Cancún being the busiest for national and international passengers.

Likewise, it operates in the United States and Colombia, which together mobilized a total of 5.6 million passengers in April 2022, representing an increase of 20.5% compared to the same month of 2019, reflecting a continuous recovery in trips that infers a greater travel demand in general.

Cancun airport is among the 10 aerodromes in the world with the most international passenger traffic, reported the Airports Council International (ACI) in its annual report.

According to the report, the Cancun air terminal was in tenth place, with 13.2 million, an increase of 94.5 percent. Last year’s figure was 19.7% lower than 2019.

In this way, the first place in the classification of airports by international passenger traffic went to Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, followed by Istanbul (Turkey) and Amsterdam (Netherlands).

In second place was Dallas and in third position, Denver. In fact, eight US airports made it into the top 10 busiest in 2021. Two Chinese airports, Guangzhou and Chengdu, ranked eighth and ninth on the list.
