Canadiens prospect Sean Farrell pots goal, adds assist in Harvard loss

Freshman Sean Farrell, who was a fourth-round choice of the Canadiens in 2020, had a goal and an assist but it wasn’t enough for Harvard to overcome an early 3-0 deficit as top-ranked Minnesota State edged the Crimson 4- 3 Thursday at Albany, NY

Farrell, who took time out from the college season to represent the United States at the Beijing Olympics, scored Harvard’s first goal in the second period and assisted on a power-play goal by Casey Dornbach at 16:28 of the third period to close the gap to one goal.

Minnesota State outshot No. 15 Harvard 40-22, but managed only four shots over the final 15 minutes as they dropped into a defensive shell after Czech native Ondrej Pavel scored to give Mjnnesota State a 4-2 lead. Minneasota State will meet either North Dakota or Notre Dame for a place in the Frozen Four.

Jordan Harris, who is expected to sign with the Canadiens when his college seasons ends, will lead 12th-ranked Northeastern against No. 4 Western Michigan when first-round play concludes Friday at Worcester, Mass. The Huskies have another defense prospect in Jayden Struble , who will probably return to the Boston school for his senior year.

Eighth-ranked ranked Quinnipiac plays No. 11 St. Cloud State at Allentown, Pa., on Friday. Ty Smilanic, whose rights were acquired by the Canadiens in the Ben Chiarot trade, missed the ECAC final against Harvard with an injury, but he practiced Thursday and is expected to play.

Friday’s action will spotlight two of the three finalists for the Mike Richter Award, which goes to the top goaltender in the NCAA — Northeastern’s Devon Levi and Quinnipiac’s Yaniv Perets — and they are both from Dollard-des-Ormeaux.
