Canadian Women’s Hockey Team to Play Junior A Men’s Opponents in Alberta | The Canadian News

CALGARY – The Canadian women’s hockey team will play Alberta Junior A men’s teams as part of their preparation for the February Winter Olympics.

Canada will play away games against the AJHL’s Drumheller Dragons on October 18, the Olds Grizzlies on October 29 and the Camrose Kodiaks on November 3 before facing the Calgary Canucks in Calgary on January 10.

Canada lost 8-3 to BCHL’s Cranbrook Bucks and 5-1 to Trail Smoke Eaters in their first games since winning the women’s hockey world championship on August 31.

The women’s national team is currently centralized in Calgary in preparation for Beijing. Twenty-six skaters are testing 20 spots on the Olympic list.

Three goalkeepers have already been appointed to the Beijing-bound team: Ann-Renee Desbiens, Emerance Maschmeyer and Kristen Campbell.

Maschmeyer is an AJHL alumna who appeared in seven games for the Lloydminster Bobcats during the 2011-12 season. His record was 2-2-1.

Canada’s 23-play Olympic roster is expected to be announced in December.

Women are used to a regular series of games against triple-A men’s clubs as part of their Olympic preparation, but games against Junior A teams before were rarer.

Goalkeeper Shannon Szabados, another AJHL alum, made 52 saves in Canada’s 3-2 win over the AJHL Calgary Canucks on December 5, 2009.

Canada split a pair of Maritime Junior Hockey League games in September 2019, when the women lost 4-2 to the Valley Wildcats and defeated the Pictou County Crushers 4-1.
