With the green light of Kids Can Press, The science of song – a book for children ages eight to 14, written by Alan Cross, Emme Cross, and Nicole Mortillaro – was released three years later, on September 7, 2021.

The book is about how sound works, the science of how we experience music, and the evolution of headphones.

Alan Cross: The Sony Walkman came out 40 years ago, and the music hasn’t been the same since

The book explores something young people may not know about: Walkmans.

“One of the cool things about that first Walkman is that it came with two headphone jacks because the Sony CEO couldn’t imagine people isolating themselves from society and inadvertently sharing music with someone else,” Cross said.

“That lasted exactly one Walkman model before it all went to a single headphone jack. But if kids want to know why everyone walks with headphones on with their personal music devices, it all started with that device in 1979. “
