Canada lifts emergency measures after protests against Covid-19 restrictions end

Prime Minister of CanadaJustin Trudeau has lifted emergency measures taken to stop protracted trucker-led protests in Ottawa and the US border and declared the crisis over.

“Today we are ready to confirm that the situation is no longer an emergency,” Trudeau told a news conference.

“Consequently, the federal government will stop using the emergency law,” he said.

Trudeau had decided to invoke the controversial Emergency Measures Act a week ago, to end the “illegal” blockades of recent weeks in Canada.

Initially downplayed by the authorities, the protest movement began with truck drivers protesting against the obligation to be vaccinated against Covid-19 and other requirements to cross the border with the United States, but later expanded to a general rejection of public health regulations in Canada and even in rejection of the government.
