CAMe reactivates Phase 1 of environmental contingency and double Hoy No Circula

The Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Mexico (ZMVM) returns this Thursday afternoon to Phase 1 of environmental contingency, reported the Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis (CAMe), so the vehicle restrictions will be resumed with the Doble Hoy no Circula.

The agency detailed in its statement at 4:00 p.m. that maximum ozone concentrations were recorded that exceeded 154 ppb (parts per billion) at the monitoring stations of Benito Juárez (168 ppb) and Iztacalco (155 ppb).

Less than 24 hours after suspending the environmental contingency, which was initially activated on Monday afternoon, the CAMe explained that the high pressure system that has affected the air quality in the region was significantly strengthened “and once again intensified atmospheric stability, causing variable and weak wind intensity.”

The commission explained that the increase in ozone concentrations and “Extremely Bad” air quality were caused by the combination of these factors, together with intense solar radiation that has affected the Valley of Mexico.

Phase 1 of environmental contingency has the objective of reducing the population’s exposure to polluted air and the risk of affecting health; in addition to reducing the generation of pollutants and the probability of reaching high concentrations of ozone again in the coming days.

Later, in its statement at 8:00 p.m., the Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis He explained that at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, he will announce the evolution of the prevailing weather conditions and air quality in the ZMVM.

Today does not circulate

The vehicles that must suspend their circulation from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. this Friday, May 6 are:

  • Vehicles for private use with verification hologram 2.
  • Vehicles for private use with type 1 verification hologram whose last numerical digit is 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9 and those whose license plate is made up only of letters.
  • Vehicles for private use with “0” and “00” verification hologram, blue gumming, plate finish 9 and 0.
  • Vehicles with foreign license plates for private use that do not have a verification hologram will be considered as hologram two.
  • The units that transport liquefied petroleum gas (LP) that do not have a dry disconnection valve, whose registration is no.
  • Local or federal cargo vehicles stop circulating between 6:00 and 10:00 a.m., with the exception of those that are in the Self-Regulation Program of Mexico City or the State of Mexico.

The Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis suggested that the population avoid carrying out civic, cultural and recreational activities outdoors, as well as exercising outdoors between 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

  • Given the environmental contingency, the CAMe also recommended:
  • Avoid the use of flavorings, aerosols, paints, waterproofing or products that contain solvents.
  • Refuel after 6:00 p.m. and before 10:00 a.m.
  • Do not refuel after filler gun lock is released.
  • Check and repair leaks in domestic gas installations.
  • Reduce the use of fuels at home by shortening shower time to a maximum of five minutes.
  • When cooking, use containers with lids.

Sheinbaum summons experts

After the announcement of the CAMe and given the conditions of “Bad” air quality in Mexico City recorded during this week, the head of Government of the capital, claudia sheinbaum called for this Friday a meeting with atmospheric scientific groups to assess the situation.

“I have asked @CAMegalopolis that tomorrow we meet with a group of atmospheric scientists to evaluate the atmospheric contingencies that have occurred this week. Know the reasons and work on additional measures if necessary,” the official wrote in her account. from Twitter.

It should be remembered that last Tuesday, May 3, the Government of Mexico City announced that they would carry out more actions to improve air quality in the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Mexico.

The general director of Air Quality of the Ministry of the Environment (Headquarters) local, Sergio Zirath Hernández, warned that during May and June between four and five environmental contingencies were expected in the area.

The specialist explained that the high temperatures and the low cloudiness in the area cause the production of ozone to accelerate.

“Generally we have between two and four environmental contingencies a year; we had estimated that in this season of high ozone we could have between four and five, and we are sticking with the forecast, it will be a very hot May,” said the official. at a conference on Tuesday.
