At the 23rd annual Police and Peace Officers Memorial Day ceremony in Edmonton, the name of Sgt. Andrew Glenn Harnett of the Calgary Police Service was added to the Pillar of Strength monument on the Alberta Legislature grounds.

Harnett, 37, died on December 31, 2020 after being dragged down a road during a routine traffic stop. When Harnett fell out of that vehicle, he was struck by an oncoming car.

In a statement Sunday, Justice Minister Kaycee Madu said Harnett joins 100 fallen officers who gave their lives while keeping their Alberta colleagues safe.

“We owe it to Sgt. Harnett and all those who died fulfilling and protecting a debt of gratitude for their selfless commitment to public safety and the rule of law, ”he said.

“To the families and friends of the fallen, including the Harnett family, our thoughts and prayers go out to all of you.”
