Business leaders highlight new summit between Biden, AMLO and Trudeau

Business leaders from Mexico, the United States and Canada highlighted the importance of the upcoming North American Leaders Summit, the first in the last five years.

The pronouncement was made jointly by Lance Fritz, Chairman of the Board, President and CEO of Union Pacific Corporation and leader of the Committee on Trade and International Affairs of the Business Roundtable; Juan Gallardo Thurlow, president of the CULTIBA Council and leader of the International Affairs Committee of the Mexican Business Council, and Don Lindsay, President and CEO of Teck Resources Limited and President of the Business Council of Canada.

“The trilateral meeting of Leaders comes at a critical time for our continent, as our countries continue to work together to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic, strengthen supply chains and ensure a competitive and prosperous North America. “

At their meeting, we urge the three leaders to focus on promoting a competitiveness, resilience, innovation and sustainability agenda in North America and commit to the full implementation of the T-MEC, ”they said in a statement.

Last year, the United States, Canada, and Mexico ratified the T-MEC which updated the North American Economic Association. The T-MEC lays the foundation for competitiveness and prosperity in all three economies. “Full compliance with the commitments of the agreement will position the three countries to compete in a global economy,” added the leaders.

The three organizations urged Leaders to work together on a comprehensive economic partnership and trilateral North American agenda to:

  • Improve North America’s competitiveness and innovation leadership.
  • Leverage the T-MEC to establish diverse, flexible and resilient regional supply chains; improve energy independence and sustainability; support the digital economy and facilitate trade for the benefit of companies, farmers and workers in the three countries. This includes addressing the current challenges of implementing the T-MEC.
  • Work collaboratively to address climate change and ensure North American energy security.

Business leaders affirmed that they will continue their work with all three governments to build a more competitive and innovative regional economy that benefits all North American citizens.
