The Brazilian authorities investigate two suspected cases of the disease crazy cows in humans in the state of Rio de JaneiroRio’s municipal health secretary said in a statement on Thursday.
The investigation comes after Brazil confirmed two cases of “atypical” mad cow disease in animals, which led to the suspension of beef exports to China September 4.
“The municipal health authorities of Rio de Janeiro received from the National Institute of Infectious Diseases Evandro Chagas de la Fiocruz the notification of two suspected cases of prion disease, “the statement said.
“(The cases) would be associated with the consumption of beef contaminated by Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis, also known as mad cow disease. “
The cases in animals were identified in meat plants in the states of Mato Grosso and Minas Gerais, the government said, adding that they are the fourth and fifth cases of “atypical” mad cow disease that have been detected in Brazil in 23 years.
