Borrell’s War, by Sergi Sol

The Court of Auditors revoked this week the decision to annul the guarantees of the Catalan Institute of Finances (ICF) that Albert Castellanos signed and that were devised by President Aragonès and the ‘conseller’ Giró to deal with liens arranged by that entity presided over by Margarita Mariscal de Gante, former minister of Aznar. From when, by the way, he spoke Catalan privately.

The renewal of the Court of Auditors has allowed a remarkable change of sensitivities, more in line with the desire to channel problems instead of accentuating them. So that guarantee that yesterday was not appropriate “in any case”, is now accepted without further ado, thus giving the reason to the Consell de Garanties Estatutàries, which considered the ICF guarantee adjusted to law.

The endorsement, worth 5.4 million euros, even covered the ‘former minister’ of Economy Andreu Mas-Colell, which gives an idea of how arbitrary the measure is, since even laymen in law know that one is innocent until proven otherwise. It also affected, among others, Oriol Junqueras and Carles Puigdemont, although in its day – after the umpteenth controversy between the current government partners – only ERC tightened its belt.

Simultaneously with this rectification by the Court of Auditors, in accordance with a policy of the Spanish Government of not adding salt to the wound, there has been one of those declarations that surprise not only for its content but also for its timing. Pepe Borrell, the scourge of sovereignism, has taken advantage of the Russian invasion of Ukraine to attack Puigdemont. He didn’t mention the one from Junts by name. But everything was understood.

It is not only frivolous because a war has broken out in Ukraine and there are hundreds of thousands of those fleeing, but also because it is indicative of the affiliations and (in this case) the phobias of those who should set an example in the face of a war with consequences devastating. Take advantage of the fact that the Pisuerga passes through Valladolid to unleash our demons is unbecoming of anyone with responsibilities. But if, in addition, he acts as high representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, it is absolutely inadmissible.
