Police received a complaint about the abandoned vehicle near Skmana Lake around 1 pm on April 22.

When officers went to the burned-out sedan near Skmana Lake Road and Loakin Bear Creek Road, “the body of an unknown individual was found inside the vehicle,” said RCMP Sgt. Chris Manseau in a statement on Tuesday.

Because it’s “an unexpected and suspicious death,” the regional major crime unit took over the investigation.

The area is a popular recreational destination and police are hoping someone with trail or dash-camera footage will get in touch. The info line is at 1-877-987-8477.

Manseau said investigators are still trying to identify the victim. However, a dog was spotted wandering near the abandoned vehicle with the body inside, and police have released a photo of it hoping someone will recognize the dog and further the investigation.
