‘Blood Moon’, a Spanish manga about vampires and lycanthropes

This weekend not only has Manga Barcelona returned with its 27th edition, the first face-to-face in times of pandemic, it has also been published ‘Blood Moon’, de Wade Otaku and Drawill. It is a Spanish brand ‘shonen’ full of action, fantasy and, as the title suggests, blood.

The youtuber Wade Otaku and the scriptwriter and cartoonist Drawill have made a play about vampires and lycanthropes who are at war. Dregan, protagonist and vampire, lives in Nox City, a city inhabited only by his kind. He has to take care of his sister Nath, who is apparently ill and isolated. However, she hides a very deep secret.

It is the first time that both artists work together. Wade Otaku, Joaquín, always wanted to do a manga, so he decided to contact Drawill, Guillem Casasola. “I saw his works [las de Drawill] by Twitter and I really liked his style because it was very personal, very personal“Wade Otaku explains about how he decided to work with the writer and cartoonist.

“Wade explained his idea to me and I happened to have some stories about vampires and werewolves too,” says Drawill of the fusion of ideas to create ‘Blood Moon’. Both wrote the whole argument and presented it to Norma Editorial, where they were approved to move the project forward.

From here, Drawill recounts the decision of the name and design of the ‘story board’, the first part of the creative process. This was followed by the creation of the vignettes in the manuscripts. He himself explains that the most difficult was the narrative processas it “has to have a rhythm”.

Both say that, even though they did not know each other before starting the project, it was “very fluid” to work with each other. “We are similar people with very similar tastes. We both love ‘One Piece'”, explains Joaquín. And adds: “We have connected very well and that has made the manga flow and it has turned out so well. ”

Children of ‘One piece’

Precisely ‘One piece’ is the greatest reference of both, especially of Drawill when it comes to drawing. “‘One Piece’ influenced me a lot -he declares-. Since I was little I read a lot of manga and a lot of ‘shonen’ and I have been influenced by many authors, but Eichiro Oda is my cornerstone“.

With the onset of the pandemic, the process paused and everything progressed more slowly. Wade confesses that even “there was a risk of canceling everything”, although fortunately for both and for the readers it did not end up happening. He himself admits that he was scared and Drawill points out that it was a “very tense” situation. The cartoonist and screenwriter adds that “the good thing about the pandemic” was that it gave them the opportunity to “concentrate on the project three times from home” and have “discount time to be able to think about it and develop it all better, making different versions “.

“It was a very time consuming process,” says Wade. “Each vignette is super cared for, the story is hyper revised. It is not something that has been done haphazardly,” he explains and adds that he wants it to be noticed. ” honey with which the manga has been made“.

Both Drawill and Wade Otaku are shown very grateful to have had so much creative freedom. “As for the plot, there was hardly any change,” says Wade. Guillem Casasola explains that during the creation of the ‘story board’ there were more changes, but “they were only modifications of the camera’s focus, details and small tweaks”. “They take care of us at Norma, they pamper us,” they both joke.

The authors They do not rule out working together again when they finish the series from ‘Blood Moon’. In fact, the proposal is on the table and the options are being considered. However, both are focused on the current manga and on finishing the two missing volumes that will be presented in the following editions of Manga Barcelona. Also, before starting any other manga, they both would love for ‘Blood Moon’ to be adapted into anime. “It’s the goal. Why not? We think it has the potential to be upbeat,” Wade explains. “We are ambitious”, concludes Drawill.
