Bisping the Edmonton Grand Winner at AMPIA’s 47th Annual Rosie Awards

Rosie 2021 results have been obtained, and 10 of the 55 Alberta Media Production Industries Awards have been for Edmonton-based productions: five in class categories, five in crafts.

Annual provincial awards often tilt in favor of Calgary’s most active and vigorous film industry, some years longer than others, but any recognition of our film ecosystem is a victory for creative innovation and economic diversification.

Edmonton’s 10 wins are ample, though three were for a single production.

Score G Productions, which often creates sports-related movies, took home the best unscripted production in 30 minutes for Bisping, the documentary story of UFC middleweight Michael Bisping directed by Michael Hamilton. In crafts, Scott Dodds cast screenwriter (unscripted for 30 minutes) Rosie for the same movie. And the best overall sound (no script over 30 minutes) joins many Rosies on the Johnny Blerot and Carey Opper shelf.

Also sports-related, FC Edmonton’s Eat Like an Eddie cooking show with Tomi Ameobi took home Best Information or Lifestyle Series.

Another award in the class category, Best Educational Production, went to the documentary (Re) claiming Indian status from BearPaw Media and Education.

On the corporate side, Geffen Media’s mother-daughter ad for Alberta Dental Association & College took home the best TV commercial for less than $ 50,000, while the best corporate production for less than $ 30,000 went to Aasttha Khajuria and Prasann. Patel, produced by When We Give Back, Edmonton Grows. .

Back in the arts and crafts categories, Frederick Kroetsh and Neil Grahn won the award for best screenwriter (unscripted in less than 30 minutes) for their Queen of the Oil Patch episode, Lost Sisters.

Best Host – Independent Web Program, Series or Production went to Steve Jodoin for his role as a scout on CBC’s Cow-boy Urbain – “La Grande Aventure”.

Gord Marriott won the award for best narrator presenter in the Fields of Home episode of The Adventures of Chase Duffy.

Outside of Edmonton, expatriate Prairie Dog Films, now based in Calgary, won Best Unscripted Production for 30 Minutes for its series Tribal, Secret History of the Wild West took Best Unscripted Series and Range Roads won Best Picture hyphenated.

Barry Bilinski and Kyle Thomas took the Rosies with the best director script, less than 30 minutes for the first, more than 30 minutes for the second.
