Birmingham Diamond League LIVE: Latest Updates & Results

(PENNSYLVANIA)

Canadian Aaron Brown won the first men’s 100m race of the Diamond League season with a disappointing show in Birmingham on Saturday, after two false starts disqualified top contender Trayvon Bromell and local favorite Zharnel Hughes.

Brown clocked 10.13 seconds, a minor improvement on his previous ‘B’ race when he posted 10.23 behind Jeremiah Azu, as the main event of the competition came to an anticlimactic finish when Bromell and Hughes scrambled.

“I’m glad I won this one and not the first one, if I had to choose,” Brown said. “I felt good. My plan was to have a training day. I have another race to run in the relay, so three races in a Diamond League is a record, but I love it.

“I’m trying to work and prepare for the world championships.”

Former world champion Yohan Blake of Jamaica finished second in 10.18 seconds, while Jerome Blake of Canada took bronze with a 10.20-second effort. His fellow Canadian Andre De Grasse was fourth after a disappointing race.

Great Britain’s 200m world champion Dina Asher-Smith finished strong to seal a hard-fought women’s 100m race in 11.11 seconds, beating Jamaican Shericka Jackson by a hundredth of a second. The British Daryll Neita took the bronze with 11.14.

Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah had withdrawn from the meet earlier this week after the Jamaican experienced discomfort in training, denying the Birmingham crowd a clash between the last two Diamond League women’s 100m champions. .

Tokyo Games 1,500m silver medalist Laura Muir marked her first race of the season following a back problem with a solid show to claim gold in the women’s event, ahead of Australia’s Jessica Hull and Kenyan Winny Chebet.

Roared by the crowd at Alexander Stadium, which has been redeveloped for this year’s Commonwealth Games from July 28, the 29-year-old Briton lit the afterburners towards the end to cross the line in 4:02.81.

“Coming here and winning my first race of the season, I am very happy. The win was more important than the time in my first race, especially as it was quite windy,” Muir said. “He was solid and ran from the front as well.”

Men’s High Jump: Django Lovett stuns Gianmarco Tamberi

Django Lovett took victory in the men’s high jump with a season-best 2.28m, beating Olympic champion Gianmarco Tamberi.

The Croat said: “I’m definitely happy with it – scalping Gianmarco (Tamberi) is a great start to the season for me. Coming out victorious in a Diamond League doesn’t happen very often, but I still think I could jump higher. I’m not denying that it’s special to beat him as I know what he’s capable of, but I know my skills and I’m confident I’ll make it to the competition, especially after finishing third last week. “It’s going to be a long season, so I’m happy. With 2.28m I’m not going to sit down. My plan now is to go home and get fit to prepare for the world champions, but the Diamond Leagues are very important to me as there is always a great field. In any championship, my goal is to get on the podium and that will be the case in the World Championship and I am pushing to achieve it.”

While Tamberi said: “It wasn’t the best competition, but it wasn’t the worst either. After Doha, I tried to restart today. I fixed some things, the technical aspect, but we still have to work a lot because when I try to jump higher to push more, I make more mistakes, so it is not a good condition to compete at the moment, but the competition helps. “The conditions. They are totally different compared to Doha, going from 35 degrees to 17 today, but I am going to keep working and I will be racing again next weekend.”
