Bingo offers routes for cyclists throughout Winnipeg

The website Winnipeg Cycling Bingo (New window) was created by Steve Lambert and his son, Julien Bertazzo Lambert. It offers 25 places listed for cycling enthusiasts.

This idea was born from a simple discussion. I was next to my son at my mother’s house and he had his laptop. I told him I would like to do some kind of bingo for cyclists in Winnipeg, but I didn’t know howsays Steve Lambert.

About 25 minutes later, the base of the site was built, he adds.

In total, it took us a weekend, says Julien Bertazzo Lambert, who studies computer science in Toronto. The site is not very complicated: there are three buttons and the site offers random routes.

Globally secure circuits

A total of twenty routes are offered. Julien Bertazzo Lambert took charge of the technical issues in the construction of this site. His father, Steve, provided the tour ideas, photos and descriptions that accompany the locations. He also created the maps that precisely indicate the route.

Most routes are safe and follow the route of bike paths in Winnipeg. There are ways to traverse Winnipeg with safe tracks and trails for milesnotes Steve Lambert.

It is important, in my opinion, to discover the trails that are there because there are some, like the one that runs along Bishop Grandin, that allow you to ride for kilometers while being separated from vehicles. »

However, some existing tracks are not connected to each other, because the Manitoba capital is still building its network.

Therefore, Steve Lambert warns that not all routes are suitable for families. There are sections where the track is not separated from traffic, and this for a few blocks.

However, when this is the case, the streets taken are generally not very busy.

Courses of about twenty kilometers to… 131 km

The site itself is extremely simple. It is composed of three buttons, accompanied by 25 squares with a photo and a brief description of the place mentioned.

It was like an exercise for meexplains Julien Bertazzo Lambert, who has already worked on bigger projects as part of his studies.

This one was very small and I wanted to see if I could do it quickly, with not much codehe adds.

The result is no less effective. Once on site, Winnipeg amateur cyclists have the choice between being assigned a random route or a circuit forming a loop. As for the length of the journeys, it ranges from about fifteen kilometers to… 131 km.

That’s the option hard-core, jokes Steve Lambert. This route includes all of the 25 squares offered on the site.

There are some very beautiful places and very beautiful trails in Winnipeg. »

The father and son have also created a special section of the site, a Hall of Famewhere the names of the people who will have made the journey of 131 km in one day will be registered.

They also plan to translate the site into French, in order to offer a bilingual version. I would like to have a bilingual site. I will ask my son when he returns from Toronto in Junepromises Steve Lambert.
