The Legault government indicated on Tuesday that it will release funds to purchase up to 1,200 12-meter-long electric buses, which will be delivered between 2024 and 2026.

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has been mandated to lead this mega bus purchase project, both to meet its needs, but also those of exo and transport companies in Laval, Longueuil, Trois -Rivières, Sherbrooke, Saguenay, Lévis, the Capital and the Outaouais.

The total purchase cost has not been disclosed by the CAQ government since it will depend on the bids received, but everything suggests that it will be measured in billions of dollars.

Last fall, the CAQ had provided an envelope of $ 5 billion for the purchase of approximately 2,150 electric buses by 2030, a sum expected to be divided almost equally between the purchase of vehicles and the adaptation of garages to maintain and recharge them.

“In order to maximize the potential for local economic spinoffs, the level of Canadian content required in the context of this call for tenders must be 25% and the final assembly must be carried out in Canada”, however specified the CAQ in a press release. .

“As of 2025, all new vehicles acquired by public transit companies and benefiting from a government subsidy will be electric vehicles,” said Environment Minister Benoit Charrette.
