Belgium delays the abandonment of nuclear energy for 10 years


Belgium will postpone until 2035 its exit from nuclear energy, initially planned for 2025, due to the rise in electricity prices caused by the Russian invasion of UkraineBelgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo reported on Friday.

“The federal government decided to take all necessary measures to extend the life of the two most recent nuclear reactors by ten years,” De Croo wrote on Twitter.

Germany, the main economy of the European Union (EU)is also facing pressure to review its plan to abandon nuclear energy, although that possibility was ruled out last week by ministers in the government of Olaf Scholz.

The EU is looking for alternatives to reduce its energy dependence on Russiawhich supplies 40% of the bloc’s gas needs, mainly from Germany, Italy and Central European countries.
