The most recent attack occurred at around 5:20 pm on April 27, when a prisoner was stabbed a reported 40 times by other inmates. The prisoner was taken from the scene by air ambulance.

In a statement Correctional Service Canada said a number of assailants who attacked the prisoner had been identified and the local RCMP detachment as well as the CSC were investigating. The spokesperson said no prison guards were injured. There is no update on the prisoner’s condition.

“The assailants have been identified and the appropriate actions have been taken,” the CSC statement read.

RCMP is also investigating a similarly savage attack that occurred at Kent Institution on Feb. 5 in which a prisoner was stabbed by another prisoner several times and also taken by air ambulance to hospital.

According to the CSC, the injured prisoner has since returned to the jail.

In March, 17 cellphones and charging cables and eight SIM cards were seized in the prison – as well as 418 grams of cannabis concentrate the CSC claimed was worth more than $200,000.

There were five homicides in Canadian prisons in 2020.
