Battle of the Bands returns to Kingston

After rescheduling multiple times and rearranging plans repeatedly, the Festival Juvenis Battle of the Bands will return live.

Tomorrow at Confederation Park, the music will begin at 2pm, featuring eight different local musical acts.

This year the Flute Gang, Futura Free, Fake Jazz Orchestra, The Backsteps, Sarah Zanibbi, Boat Soup, Claire Brackenbury and Lauren and The Dirty Blonde will compete.

Battle of the Bands was initially set for April, but due to lockdowns and changes in COVID restrictions it had to be rescheduled and planned multiple times.

The event was to be completely virtual, but we are delighted to be able to go ahead with the event in person.

After being without him for a year, Juvenis co-managing director Maya Meyerman says organizers are delighted to have the event back.

“Battle of the Bands is one of the basic events that we have had as part of the festival since its inception in 2016,” said Meyerman.

“So it was very important for us to have him back and give the young music community a chance to perform.”

The event will follow Ontario’s outdoor gathering limits of 100 people, with 70-80 tickets available to residents in capsules of five people at $ 5 each.

Each performer will have 10-15 minutes to perform, and performances will be judged by two members of the local Kasador band.

This will be the first Battle of the Bands event since 2019, and the first in-person event hosted by Juvenis Festival since March 2020, as the festival’s events have been virtual for two years.

Meyerman says the Juvenis team has worked hard to make it accessible online, but they are excited to have an in-person component.

“Even though we’ve done everything we can to transition everything online, it’s really exciting to be able to have in-person musical performances so soon,” Meyerman said.

Tickets for tomorrow’s event can be purchased at Juvenis’ website, and the festival is accepting applications for project leaders 2022 through October 10.

In addition to tomorrow’s show, Juvenis will also present the sold out musical Evil Dead from September 23-26 at the Baby Grand.
