Edmonton’s MacEwan University and Calgary’s Mount Royal University announced the bet ahead of Wednesday night’s Game 1 between the Oilers and Flames.

The terms of the bet dictate the losing university will fly the flag of the winning team on its flagpole on campus for a day.

It’s the first playoff matchup between the two Alberta teams since 1991, when the Oilers won the series in seven games.

“The last time there was a Battle of Alberta in the playoffs, MacEwan had yet to bring all our students downtown to one campus,” said Dr. Annette Trimbee, the school’s president and vice-chancellor.

“MacEwan is excited to cheer on the blue and orange in the playoffs.”

Mount Royal University president and vice-chancellor Dr. Tim Rahilly said “it’s obvious the Flames are the superior squad.”

“We look forward to seeing the flaming ‘C’ flag flying on MacEwan’s campus.”

Both universities will also be fundraising to donate at least $1,000 to their student food banks.

On Monday, the cities’ mayors also announced a wager.

If the Flames win the second-round series against their cross-province rivals, Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi will wear a Calgary jersey as well as full Flames face paint at his next council meeting. If it’s the Oilers who prevail, it will be Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek in council chambers donning an Oilers sweater with her face painted blue and orange.

Game 2 is set for 8:30 pm on Friday in Calgary.
