Barcelona: separatists demonstrate in support of Carles Puigdemont

The Catalan separatists were quick to support what they still call “their president”. Carles Puigdemont was arrested this Thursday evening on his arrival in Sardinia. The former president of Catalonia is still being sued by Madrid for his role in the 2017 secession attempt.

Since mid-morning, a few hundred independence activists have gathered peacefully. According to them, this arrest is illegal because the European arrest warrant is suspended by the courts.

The pro-independence MEP, whose parliamentary immunity was lifted in March, was detained by the Italian police in the evening, upon his arrival at Alghero airport (Sardinia), where he was preparing to participate in the 33rd edition of the International Festival of Catalan Culture, which was also to welcome leading Catalan officials.

This Friday, the Sassari Court of Appeal finally decided to release the former president of Catalonia but the latter still cannot leave the island.
