Attack by Russia: Quebec ready to welcome Ukrainian refugees

Quebec will do “its part” to welcome refugees from Ukraine, said Premier François Legault, a few hours after Russia invaded the country on Thursday.

“We woke up to horrible images of a new war in Europe this morning. We hoped never to see that again,” he wrote in a message posted on his Facebook page on Thursday, adding that his “heart is with the people of Ukraine.”

“Quebec strongly condemns Russian aggression in Ukraine. We sincerely hope to see a ceasefire quickly. The federal government can count on our full cooperation in the efforts it will undertake in this regard,” he continued.

François Legault adds that he has “confidence that we will be able to defend together our democracies and the fundamental principles of our societies”.

On Thursday morning, opposition parties in Quebec also expressed concern over rising tensions in Ukraine after Russian President Vladimir Putin launched an invasion of the country, with airstrikes and military entries. ground forces including in the direction of the capital Kiev.
