Associate of Kevin J. Johnston Charged After Drone Illegally Flew Over Multiple Calgary Locations – Calgary | The Canadian News

A man known for being friends with far-right social media personality Kevin J. Johnston has been indicted after a drone flew illegally several times this week in Calgary, even at the CFL game this past weekend.

Transport Canada and the Calgary Police Service said they are investigating the incidents.

The first occurred on Monday, when police said a drone flew over McMahon Stadium during the Labor Day Classic between the Calgary Stampeders and Edmonton Elks.

The operator was “in violation of flying over crowds, over 400 feet and operating the drone in airspace occupied by the Royal Canadian Air Force,” police said.

The second incident took place Tuesday at City Hall and Olympic Plaza, in which police said the drone flew over crowds.

Calgary police said Derek Storie was arrested Tuesday and charged with:

  • Two counts of operating a means of transportation in a manner dangerous to the public, under section 320.13 (1) of the Penal Code.
  • A charge for operating a remotely piloted aircraft system in such a reckless or negligent manner that it endangers or may endanger aviation safety, contrary to section 900.06 of the Canadian Aircraft Regulations.

Police said that under Transport Canada regulations, drone pilots cannot fly near or over announced events, unless they have a special flight operations certificate that allows them to do so.

Storie is often seen attending such events with Johnston, and she usually helps broadcast the events live online.

The two were seen together at a large protest outside GraceLife Church near Edmonton, which circumvented Alberta’s public health restrictions during the winter and spring of 2021.

Johnston recently pleaded guilty to criminal charges of harassing an Alberta Health Services employee and causing a disturbance in a downtown Calgary shopping mall.
