Ana Iglesias (Madrid, 1995) He gets up early, exercises and attends the appointment with EL ESPAÑOL on time. He greets effusively, continues with a protocol, how’s it going, and responds with the same joy with which he won over the public already Pepe Rodríguez, Samantha and Jordi Cruz on MasterChef 8. He is not in his best moment, but, at first, it is not noticeable. Only when we talk about mental health is a certain fragility guessed. No one would have thought it, but it is. It has been more than a year since she was proclaimed winner of the culinary TVE program and his life, professionally, has turned upside down.

She never really thought it would be possible. He didn’t even have the audacity to think she was the favorite. No, she always believed that Ivan It would be the king and she… well, it would be second or third. But he won. He fulfilled his dream, entered the Basque Culinary Center and won 100,000 euros. Suddenly, he became recognizable to the more than three million viewers who watched the MasterChef finale.

She had studied Law and ADE (Business Administration and Management); had created her own jewelry brand (Dosprimeras); She was on the way to a stable life as a businesswoman… But, along the way, she ran into MasterChef. And he has no regrets. After going through Lanzarote this summer – and see Luna, her partner in the television program -, go with her friends to Cádiz and visit Galicia With his family, he has many projects on his mind, but also a lot to work on mentally.

– Speaking of summer. She has been very thoughtful on her Instagram and I would say worried. Only with this phrase I can imagine: “There are days when nothing happens and yet everything weighs.” But tell me.

– Right now I am going through a moment in which it is not my best moment of tranquility. They have told me that I have hyperthyroidism and that affects a lot having anxiety, tachycardias … and that does not make you feel 100% calm. So I am making an effort to organize myself, to play sports, to do things that are good for me … And I talk about it in networks because I think it is important for people to know that it is something normal and that it happens to everyone. That is why I comment on it and, as a result of that, there are people who tell me that they feel identified, or that they thank me … Currently, I am not going to the psychologist, but I am looking to go to one now with the ‘back to school ‘to help me feel better. I said, nothing important is wrong with me, but I am upset inside.

– Too many changes in a short time?

– You have to assimilate it. I knew it had to come sometime.

– On his Instagram he also talks about mental health as the most important thing. Is it for you?

– Yes, it is. What I have learned in this time is that if you are not good with yourself it is impossible to be good with others. Nothing matters if you are not well, neither the contracts, nor the opening of a restaurant. All of that is very good. But if I’m not well, what else does that give me. In the end, we work to live and we do not live to work. So yes, I consider it the most important.

– Do you dare to recommend something to people who suffer from a mental health problem?

– Talk to someone, be it a friend, a parent or a psychologist. But they didn’t keep it inside. Two heads think more than one and, when you are not perfect, you tend to think of the worst, of all the bad … If you speak it, you can see it with more perspective and that can help you to be calmer and better.

Your projects

Hence, the new Ana, in this beginning of ‘course’, tries to live more calmly. Read (Your Wrong Zones: A Guide To Fighting The Causes Of Unhappiness, by Wayne Dyer), combines work with film (One day, his last recommendation) and goes step by step. The kitchen, his dream of being a chef, is there, but he doesn’t want to force it. After all, getting into the kitchen was always a hobby for her. Learned in Youtube, looking for the videos of Martin Berasategui, tuning it Kitchen Channel O MasterChef.

She didn’t even show up to reality. It was a friend of hers who took the step. “He got sick at heart and during those months we were keeping him a lot of company. We saw MasterChef and that’s why she decided to sign me up, ”she says. By surprise, she was immersed in the casting and moved on. He came, he saw and he won.

“How has your life changed since then?” Pepe always says that the program changes their lives.

– At the professional level, completely; at the family level, nothing. Now I can dedicate myself to cooking issues and before, no. Before it was just a hobby.

– What challenges do you have for this new course?

– For five years I have a jewelry brand (Dosprimeras). Now, after my time at MasterChef, I wanted to unite the world of fashion with that of the kitchen and we have released a kitchen collection on our website where we sell this type of thing: aprons, tablecloths, napkins, rags … I’m on the line to continue with my personal project and unite it with my other passion, with cooking.

– Is something else up to?

Well, we are with the creation of the new kitchen utensils and in the workshop where I make the jewels, I set up a kitchen. Before the summer, I started doing interviews with well-known characters while we cooked. For the moment, two. To the television presenter Nagore Robles and Teresa Baca, sports journalist at LaSexta. Now I will start again to see who I can bring.

– Didn’t you ask Pepe, Samantha and Jordi to make a hole for you?

– In his day I told Jordi, but with so much trouble I have not yet been able to go to Barcelona. But at some point I would love to.

– When is your restaurant for?

– This summer has given me a lot to think about and I have considered several things, but I want to do it well. At the moment, I can’t reveal anything.

Ana doesn’t want to rush. Repeat, like a mantra, your short-term goals: “I want to be calm, keep an order, enjoy and not overwhelm myself, because I am overwhelmed”, stresses. His life, at the base, remains the same: he enjoys with his parents and his two brothers; She keeps her boyfriend –whom half of Spain she met through MasterChef– and keeps her style.

She is averse to ridges and does not get carried away by trends. Admire punk chefs (Dabiz Muñoz and Carlos Maldonado), but she wouldn’t wear dreadlocks to get noticed. “I’m more of braids,” he jokes. Ultimately, the important thing is what each one cooks. That is clear to him. For this reason, their dishes are never lacking –among many other things– tomato …

– You are very ‘real food’. Does it coincide with the movement of Carlos Ríos?

– I like to eat healthy because it is the food that I enjoy, but I do not follow any movement. This is like people who like sweet or salty, because I like vegetables. But this is a move of its own (jokes).

– Excuse me to continue with the subject, but this summer there has been a struggle between the gazpacho of Belén Esteban and that of Carlos Ríos. Have you tried them? Do you keep any?

– I had not found out, but, personally, I am very gazpacho.

– What he also likes are hamburgers. Is it home to be a Masterchef with fast food? There are other ex-contestants who cultivate it a lot (Aleix, winner of the seventh edition, and Carlos Maldonado).

– It seems great to me that everyone does what they consider and is true to their style. If Aleix, for example, likes hamburgers, then go ahead. And in the case of Carlos, the truth is that he has done phenomenal. You do not have to detach yourself from anything. He has his Michelin-starred restaurant and then his hamburgers, which are certainly not fast food… They have to carry a job behind them (laughs).

– To finish: he recommends a place to eat in Madrid.

– There is a restaurant that I love called Belmondo. The food is very tasty and the place is spectacular. It has a very nice atmosphere and is beautiful. And then, I would tell you the Filandon, which I suppose people know about. They are two completely different styles. Belmondo would be to go with friends and Filandon to go with parents.
