Algorithmic Perfumery, the creation of individualized perfumes guided by AI

Based on the question: “What if every human being could have their own personal scent?”, this time I will tell you about a new way to create a perfume with a personalized scent by putting users at the center of the creation process.

EveryHuman’s Algorithmic Perfumery stands on the line of art, science and technology. It was born from the meeting between artist-technologist Frederik Duerinck and fragrance designer Anahita Mekanik. This work of art was conceived as a participatory installation that addresses the relationship between man and machine (AI) and thus confront us with ourselves. Driven by the question “what if every human being could create their own scent?”, he has traveled to art and design festivals around the world to engage and learn from a wide range of audiences.

It is the world’s first AI-guided scent creation platform to explore a world of scents. From creating custom scents, to customizing creations from an internal library, to delving into the creative process with a scent training session or workshop, anything is possible.

Algorithmic Perfumery is also a company that offers its unique perfumes as a real product, with the aim of transforming the future of perfumery, in this experience, participants or consumers can interact with an application in which they answer a questionnaire and connect their data of social networks in a way that includes them in the production process. In this way, the brand challenges the perfume industry and offers an alternative in which participants co-create with the algorithmic process for new results.

Empower people using their senses

In partnership with IFF and IFF-LMR, the ScenTronix Inc system features a palette of exclusive raw materials, a blend of high-quality natural and cutting-edge scent molecules, where visitors will navigate by answering a short set of questions and then sit back to watch. like a sensory machine creates the smell in front of them. And it’s not a one-time deal: just like in working fragrance labs, the machine mixes up a series of variations, giving these ‘modifications’ to the human co-creator to smell, at which point they can choose for making changes and creating a final version.

The science

Artificial intelligence (AI) is used as a tool to help solve the biggest puzzle when it comes to scents. The user drives the process, and the AI complements the data with existing learning to create hyper-personal scents.

The technology

For the last 4 years, Duerinck & Mekanik, together with a team of 15 people, have been on a quest to develop and build an algorithmic perfumery. ScenTronix is a new technology company based in Breda, the Netherlands, where the custom hardware and software system used for algorithmic perfumery is developed in-house.

The patent-pending technology is made up of sensory machines of various sizes, including an oversized model with over 500 ingredients intended for rapid prototyping and deep diving into uncharted olfactory territories.

The founder of ScenTronix explains that “Algorithmic perfumery uses technology to enable people to have a highly personalized and meaningful experience with their senses,” and says that while the entire experience has been designed to be “…in its In its simplest form, a platform for people to co-create their own perfume’, it also hopes that ‘this interactive and playful experience will allow them to discover and enjoy new aspects of themselves, and a new outlet for their imagination’.

In conclusion, I believe that as humans, we gather information from the world around us through all of our senses. Once this information is processed in parts of our body, we create a true “sensory experience”. Each sensory stimulus, whether it is smell, touch, taste, sound or sight, changes our perception and understanding of reality. in a different way. Each of them allows a different narrative. This is what leads us to incorporate multisensory technologies.
