With two nominations in his pocket for best performance by an Alberta actor, Shaun Johnson took home the award at the Alberta Film & Television Awards on Saturday night. He won for his role in Tapped Potential Films’ short Theft, but had also been nominated for an episode of the long-running family drama Heartland in which he plays curmudgeonly patriarch Jack Bartlett.

The best performance by an actress from Alberta went to Helen Belay for her role in an episode of the Abracadavers television series.

The award for best scripted series or miniseries (which used to be in two categories, best dramatic spectacle and best comedy) went to the television program Jann for his episode titled No Drama.
The best unscripted series went to Rodeo Nation for its episode Stick With It. This The documentary series follows five indigenous rodeo riders hoping to win big at the Indian National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.
Best Scripted Feature Film, Made-for-TV Movie, Made for OTT or Specialty Cable Networks went to Before you change your mind. At Sundance 2020, the script for the coming-of-age film that questions gender. was included in The GLAAD List: a curated list of the 10 most promising LGBTQ+ inclusive scripts in Hollywood.

The Rosies, as they are called, held two ceremonies on Saturday: one in the afternoon for class entrances and one in the evening for crafts.
Several people won two or more awards, including Larry Day and Holly Fortier for best unscripted director over 30 minutes, and for their show Ayoungman for best unscripted production over 30 minutes. Johnny Blerot also won two awards – best overall sound unscripted under 30 minutes (The Wop May Story) and unscripted over 30 minutes (The Musical Animal). Scott Westby won three awards: best director with a script over 30 minutes (Jonesin’), best production (Genice) and best web series (Opera Labs).
Other notable victories went to:

• Edmonton Journal art writer Fish Griwkowsky, along with filmmaker Trevor Anderson, won best screenwriter (with a script over 30 minutes) for Before I Change My Mind, which is screened at the Calgary International Film Festival September 25 at 3:30 p.m. and October 2 at 11:15 a.m. (Eau Claire cinemas)
• Matt Prazak won the best screenwriter (screenplay under 30 minutes), for the short film Theft.
• Best Musical or Variety Program or Series went to Calgary’s Naughty… but nice Vaccin8’s Roadwest Pictures and Forte Musical Theater.
