October was a brilliant month for the airline industry with the push of foreign airlines, mainly from the United States. In addition to resuming growth in passenger transport (for seasonal reasons), the drop compared to the 2019 figures is already in one digit.
During October, all companies transported seven million 434,983 passengers, which represented an increase of 2.8% compared to the previous month and compared to the same month a couple of years ago the decrease was 7.1% (in September the annual fall reached 12.4%), according to figures from the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT).
In said month, national companies (led by Volaris and VivaAerobus) mobilized four million 148,811 passengers, 10.1% less than those served in 2019. National companies with foreign flights (led by Aeroméxico and Volaris) totaled 969,874 people, which which represented a drop of 22.2%, compared to those reported on regular flights a couple of years ago.
On the contrary, foreign companies that fly to Mexico, despite the sanitary restrictions still present, continue with positive figures, in monthly comparison they grew 8.1 percent.
Among foreign airlines, those of United States origin are the ones with the greatest dynamism and mobilized 7.6 out of every ten foreigners who arrived in Mexico.
Since last April, the 14 US airlines have registered growth relative to pre-pandemic levels. During October the increase was 24.1%, compared to the same month of 2019, adding one million 782,660 passengers.
The companies that have the most activity with flights to Mexico are: American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines and Southwest Airlines.
It is clear that the United States is capitalizing on the downgrading that Mexico has with the aeronautical authority of that country and as long as it is not possible to return to the previous level, that trend will continue, affecting the national industry that is limited to operate more flights “

“It is evident that the United States is capitalizing on the downgrading that Mexico has with the aeronautical authority of that country and as long as it is not possible to return to the previous level, this trend will continue, affecting the national industry that is limited to operate more flights. In addition, you cannot lose sight of the fact that the end of the year is when more people travel and the impact will be greater ”, considered the president of the Bojórquez tourist group, Armando Bojórquez.
Accumulated growth
Based on figures from the SICT between January and October, all airlines added 63 million 100,569 passengers, 24.4% less than those had a couple of years ago, when an increasing pace of passengers was maintained that generated, among other pressures , the need to have a new airport for the center of the country.
National companies with domestic flights have presented a better level of recovery, in such a way that the 35 million 338,294 users were 19.9% less than in 2019, while in foreign operations the fall is 42.4%, seven million 801,247 people. Meanwhile, foreign airlines served 19 million 961,028 customers, 22.7% less than a couple of years ago.
Between January and October, the main national routes were: Mexico-Cancun, Monterrey-Mexico and Tijuana-Mexico, and the international ones were: Dallas-Cancun, Mexico-Houston and Houston-Cancun.
