Actors and singers join the campaign against the Mayan Train

Cancun, QR. On the occasion of World Water Day, the Save me from the Train campaign was launched on social networks to raise awareness among the population about the risk that the Mayan Train poses to the underground rivers of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Figures from the artistic world such as Natalia Lafourcade, Saúl Hernández, Eugenio Derbez, among others, are the most visible part of this campaign in which they address the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, emphasizing that they are not his adversaries, in addition to the fact that the Train Maya in its Section 5 does not have the environmental impact or land use change authorizations that a project of this magnitude requires.

The singer Natalia Lafourcade expresses that thousands of trees have been destroyed and warns that there could be millions more if the change in the route of the Mayan Train continues. The influencer Arturo Islas specifies that the underground rivers and cenotes of Mexico have also been contaminated.

For his part, Eugenio Derbez highlights that “the Mayan Train is destroying the jungle, our natural heritage.” Rubén Albarrán, singer of Café Tacuba, is the one who addresses the president saying “we are not his opponents, we are Mexicans and we want life for all of us.”

Other personalities such as Gretell Valdés, Ofelia Medina, Luis Ernesto Franco, Luis Roberto Guzmán, Andrés Almeida, Azela Robinson, Jero Medina, Fabiola Campomanes, Damayanti Quintanar and Arap Bethke also appear in the video that shows images of the underground rivers above which the train will run, with columns invading the water and contamination inside the caverns.

Prior to the presentation of the video, a report on the facts was made about the four changes in the route that environmentalists claim that Section 5 has suffered in recent months.

“It is an unnecessary train. All this devastation that we are talking about is not necessary for the population or for tourism,” said Otto von Bertrab, from the civil association Centinelas del Agua, which is part of the Save me from the Train campaign.

Complaints

It should be remembered that in addition to this campaign, as well as other demonstrations rejecting the train, a group of citizens and civil organizations from the municipality of Solidaridad filed popular complaints two weeks ago with the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa), due to environmental damage and ecological caused by the works of the project, in its Section 5 after the change of line.

The complaints are against the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur) or whoever is responsible, and they ask Profepa to carry out its inspection and verification actions in the affected area, due to the clearing of the jungle made with heavy machinery, to open the way to the road in the Playa del Carmen-Tulum section.

“These inspections and verifications must demonstrate the existence of authorizations in matters of environmental impact and change of land use in forest land issued by Semarnat, which requires the Mayan Train megaproject in its new Section 5, in accordance with environmental regulations applicable federal law”, state the complaints.

They also specify that the Mayan Train needs these studies and authorizations prior to construction actions, since the technical and environmental feasibility of the set of works and activities must be demonstrated, due to the fragility of the karstic soil and subsoil in the area. which continues to be deforested.

In the absence of such studies, they ask Profepa to proceed to suspend the activities and close the works, as well as to initiate the administrative procedure and sanction, ordering the security measures and urgent application to avoid the generation of greater impacts and irreversible damage. , until repairing the damage caused by the megaproject in the section already mentioned.
