A Strathroy family has been displaced after a young girl caused a fire in her bedroom

Strathroy Cardadoc Fire responded to a call Saturday morning for a fire in a single Family home owned by London-Middlsex Housing.

Officials say a 12-year-old girl was playing with a lighter and lighting paper on fire, then putting it out.

However, this time it got too big and spread to her bed.

She quickly got out of the room but hid in the upstairs washroom. Once fire alarms sounded she was able to get out without injury, but the home is damaged.

Fire prevention officer Cody Johnson says this could have been a lot worse, and emphasizes having a clear family escape plan.
