A major cleaning chore in Mount Royal

A big clean-up was organized on Sunday at Mount Royal Park to remove the waste from this jewel of the metropolis.

Nearly 175 volunteers came out for the 30th edition of the Corvée du Mont-Royal.

In addition to picking up litter, they will have the opportunity to learn a little more about the conservation of the park.

“The park is going well, but since it is very busy, and it is large, we are talking about nearly 220 hectares of land, it is very difficult to monitor,” explained the general manager of Friends of the Mountain, Helene Panaioti.

“There is a lot of trampling in the woods, in the undergrowth. This causes a reduction in the ecological value of the Mount Royal forest. This is what we need to work on in terms of education, ”she continued.

The City of Montreal is also helping out in the park’s conservation efforts. Another cleanup will take place at the end of May.

City Councilor Alex Norris says the Mount is loved by everyone, but it attracts a lot of visitors, not all of whom are respectful.

“There is a lot of wear and tear on the ecosystem, a lot of waste unfortunately. So, it is very desirable that volunteers get to work picking up the waste,” he said.

The Sunday chore launches the complete program of activities for the month of May, the month of Mount Royal.

Guided hikes, a forum and conferences are in the spotlight to celebrate the 146th anniversary of Mt.
