His crime had horrified Quebec. In July 1979, Gilles Pimparé and his accomplice, armed with a knife and a gun, took turns raping Chantale Dupont, 15, before murdering her. They also killed his friend, 14-year-old Maurice Marcil.

They then threw them down the Jacques-Cartier bridge. The bodies were found seven days later.

The two criminals were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Gilles Pimparé, now 68, and his lawyer, do not want total release, but escorted releases or semi-freedom that would allow him to pursue computer courses. He pleads that he followed many rehabilitation programs and that he changed.

Two psychologists who evaluated him last year come to the conclusion that the risk of recidivism could be high. The risk of sexual recidivism too. He raped three women before his imprisonment. Releasing him would be premature, they say.

Maurice Marcil’s mother read a letter to the commissioners. She read an extract to the TVA Nouvelles team.

“Since July 3, anger has not left me. Time has frozen, and Maurice is still 14 years old for me. When I hear Pimparé, one of the two assassins say: “I’m not going to die in prison after all”, I want to scream,” she says.

Gilles Pimparé has returned to his cell in a penitentiary in Laval, where he will await the written decision of the commissioners within the next 15 days.
