The Edmonton Police Service said Thursday that more than 95 percent of its employees have indicated that they are or will be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by November 30, 2021.

The EPS implemented its vaccination protocol, requiring all staff to choose one of three options:

  1. Indicate that they are fully vaccinated or intend to be fully vaccinated by November 30, 2021.
  2. Participate in rapid tests at the employee’s expense and comply with additional restrictions
  3. Leave without pay pending the fulfillment of any of the options or until circumstances change so that EPS modifies the protocols.

As of October 21, 95.5 percent of employees are fully vaccinated or will be before November 30. That’s 2,673 employees.

EPS said 3.8 percent of its staff (104 employees) opted for regular rapid tests.

EPS said 0.1 percent of its staff (five employees) have chosen to take leave without pay.

“Employees who cannot be vaccinated or undergo rapid testing as a result of a protected characteristic (eg, religious beliefs) are being reasonably accommodated on an individualized basis,” explained EPS spokesperson Cheryl Sheppard.

On Tuesday, Alberta Health Services said 92 percent of its full-time and part-time employees had submitted proof of double COVID-19 vaccination.

AHS announced its mandatory immunization policy in late August.

AHS Executive Director Dr. Verna Yiu said the policy includes doctors, midwives and other front-line health care workers. All employees must be fully vaccinated by October 31.

“We support the policy and it will be fully implemented,” Yiu said on Tuesday.
