4 Calgarians out of 8 Albertans receiving the Order of Excellence – Calgary | The Canadian News

Eight Albertans, including four from Calgar, have received the highest honor from the provincial government.

They have been given the Alberta Order of Excellence, an award for those who have had an outstanding provincial, national or international impact.

“Our honorees have abundant strengths that have served our province well,” said the Lieutenant Governor. Salma Lakhani in a press release Thursday.

“These include great perseverance, a selfless commitment to giving back, and a firm focus on sharing your unique gifts and abilities in a way that enriches us all. I offer my sincere thanks to each of them for their remarkable contributions. “

The Calgarians who receive the honor are:

  • Murray McCann: Entrepreneur and community leader who reinvests his success in organizations that fight hunger, homelessness, fear and violence. He created programs that honor fallen soldiers, including the Field of Crosses along Memorial Drive, and support homeless veterans.
  • Barb Olson: Researcher, entrepreneur and expert in toxicology of recognized international prestige. Her research with her husband, Merle, in veterinary medicine has led to a better understanding of bacterial infections and treatment in humans and animals.
  • Merle Olson: Internationally renowned veterinarian and researcher. His entrepreneurial spirit with his wife, Barb, has led to the creation of innovative pharmaceutical and biotech companies that specialize in veterinary products to address animal welfare issues.
  • Greg Powell: Pioneering, innovative and educating emergency physician. He has saved countless lives by co-founding and leading the Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service (STARS) and revolutionizing emergency medicine.

“All recipients display a remarkable talent for innovative creativity in their fields,” said Alberta Prime Minister Jason Kenney.

“Whether in business, research, education or community building, his leadership has made our lives better, safer and richer. I congratulate this year’s members on their many accomplishments, proving that brilliant ideas shine brightest when courage and collaboration come together. “

There are now 197 members of the Alberta Order of Excellence.
