A $35-million arena with two rinks, locker rooms, stands, service rooms and a parking lot will be built in Magog in the Eastern Townships, Quebec Premier François Legault announced on Friday.

The arena project will receive $9.1 million in funding from the provincial and federal governments and $9.5 million from the city of Magog and the regional municipal administration. The remainder of the cost will be borrowed, then paid off with revenues generated by rentals at the arena.

Legault said construction is expected to begin in 2023 and the arena should be operational in time for the winter of 2024-2025.

Friday’s announcement comes a day after a special committee report on the development of hockey in Quebec called for infrastructure to allow that development to proceed.
