Students at Edmonton’s Concordia University are feeling the effects of a strike by dozens of faculty there. The strike is entering its second week and students are concerned about how long it might last.

Concordia student Gabby Keizer said she has been stuck at home with not much to do because of the strike.

“It’s left me a little bit empty and looking for something, so I end up looking for things online to look at like online classes,” said Gabby Keizer, a student at Concordia University.

She was supposed to start class last week, but she didn’t.

That’s because 82 full-time staff members walked off the job last week. Contract talks stalled over disagreements over pay and workload, keeping Keizer and many other students out of class.

“During this limbo here it is difficult,” he said. “We don’t know when we will go back to school, we don’t know if we will go back to school.”

Keizer said this job action is costing him more than just his education.

“It has impacted my mental health. I enjoy being at school even if it’s online classes. It’s hard to do without him.”

She is not the only one. Deneen Schmidt has two children who are also students at Concordia. She said the strike has affected her entire family.

“Now that they’re not allowed to be in school, their sense of accomplishment and purpose on a day-to-day basis is… well, they don’t really have any — it’s on hold,” Schmidt said.

A setback that the mother fears will delay her children’s graduation.

“They literally have nothing to do at home. They are unable to start a full-time job in case classes start again. They can’t register at another university because it’s already too late,” Schmidt said.

Keizer said that with the strike already underway, he just hopes the faculty and school can come to an agreement, and quickly.

“It puts a lot of pressure on the student for what we have to do,” Keizer said. “We do not know what to do”.

To support those on the picket line in Edmonton, representatives from student, staff and faculty associations from across Calgary declared their support for the ongoing labor action Friday morning.

“They’re trying to highlight the fact that they’ve been fighting like a lot of us, to try to come up with a new collective bargaining agreement,” said Mount Royal University Faculty Association President Lee Easton. “There are a lot of issues at stake here – we have a lot of the same here (at MRU), so we’re here today to show we support them.”
