For the past two years, many of us have been stuck in neutral. Due to the pandemic, our worlds have shrunk around us. When we might otherwise have visited other countries, made new friends, or explored new interests, many of us have existed in a cycle of going to work, grocery shopping, and coming home. In short, it has been difficult to think about what could happen next.

But at some point, there will be an end to this pandemic. We will be able to plan for the future, think of new experiences and look beyond the limits of our current existence.

In that spirit, I felt that Beyond would be an appropriate theme for the Grande Prairie Public Library 34 the Annual Collins Writing Contest.

The GPPL writing contest began in 1989 and was eventually named after local philanthropists Clem and Muriel Collins, whose legacy still funds the contest.

Entries must be typed, double spaced, 2000 words or less, and not previously published. Entrants must submit a hard copy of their story to the Grande Prairie Public Library by 8:00 p.m. Monday, February 28, 2022 Entries can be mailed to GPPL or dropped off at the Children’s Information Desk in the upstairs. Stories cannot be emailed; Late registrations will not be accepted.

Stories will be judged in five different categories: students in grades 1-3, grades 4-6, grades 7-9, grades 10-12, and adults. The authors of the top three stories in each category will receive a cash prize, and all winners (including honorable mentions) will also receive a print copy of the 2022 Collins Writing Contest anthology.

So start thinking outside the box! It describes places that exist beyond the edge of the map and beyond the limits of all imagination. Tell us a story about what happens after the next step, or as the postscript to the epilogue. Write an epic thriller, tender romance, or puzzling mystery about the Great Beyond. If you need more inspiration before starting your story, GPPL has you covered. We have copies of anthologies from previous years available for loan.

If you need a different form of inspiration, why not visit our YouTube channel? A GPPL staff member produced several short videos showcasing our bot’s efforts to help promote this year’s writing contest, as well as the theme announcement trailer.

Entry forms for the Collins Writing Contest can be obtained from the GPPL or downloaded from the contest page on our website at www.gppl.ca . That webpage also includes the full official rules for the contest, plus an extensive set of answers to frequently asked questions. With that, I wish all contest entrants the best of luck with their stories!
