The magazine “stern” has acquired the rights to the Hungarian fairy tale book “Meseorszag mindenkie” (fairytale land for everyone) for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The publishing house Gruner + Jahr announced today in Hamburg. It should appear in stores as a “star” book in the spring of next year.

The children’s book caused a sensation in Hungary because the right-wing Prime Minister Viktor Orban used it as a hook for a campaign directed against homosexuals and other non-heterosexual people.

Law passed

Last June, the Hungarian parliament passed a law that is supposed to prevent children and young people from being able to find out about a sexuality that deviates from the supposed norm.

In “Märchenland für alle”, Hungarian authors retell well-known fairy tales, with the hero characters belonging to minorities. These include children living in deep poverty, children with disabilities, victims of domestic violence, homosexuals and transsexuals.

The book wants to create more acceptance for disadvantaged people and members of the LGBTQ community. In Hungary, due to the new law, it cannot be openly presented in bookstores.
