Article content

An online petition launched by the Montreal SPCA requesting that the city allow leashed dogs on Montreal’s public transportation system had garnered more than 4,300 signatures as of Friday morning.

Article content

The petition calls on Mayor Valérie Plante and the newly appointed president of the Société de transport de Montréal, Eric Alan Caldwell, to allow dogs on Montreal’s public transport system and notes that Paris, London, Berlin, Barcelona, San Francisco, Calgary and Toronto have already done so.

The petition notes that only service dogs and dogs small enough to travel in a luggage rack or bag are allowed on public transportation.

The SPCA argues that the existing ban not only severely restricts the access of many people with dogs to large parks and other green spaces, but also to veterinary care and “disproportionately affects animal keepers who do not have a car for reasons financial or environmental “.

The objective of the petition is to reach 10,000 signatures and it can be consulted on the SPCA website.
