The first confirmed case of the omicron variant of the coronavirus in Iceland is a fully vaccinated man who was also given a booster dose. According to a report by Icelandic broadcaster RUV today, it is completely unclear how the 70-year-old from the western Icelandic city of Akranes contracted the mutated virus variant.

Two more cases confirmed

Since the man had sought medical treatment a few days ago, two more Omicron cases have been confirmed on the North Atlantic Island, and four more suspected cases are still being sequenced. All seven cases are said to be related to one another. According to the epidemologist Thorolfur Gudnason, the outbreak of the Omicron variant is likely to be limited to Akranes for the time being.

90 percent of Icelanders over the age of twelve received at least two doses of the vaccine, and around a third of this population segment also received a third vaccination. There are currently 1,566 active corona cases in Iceland, 22 of which are in the hospital, three people require intensive care.

Omicron cases at Christmas dinner in Oslo

Norway also reported 17 suspected Omicron cases today that were discovered after a Christmas dinner in a restaurant in the Norwegian capital, Oslo. One case has been confirmed, the remaining cases still need to be reviewed.

According to the authorities, significantly more cases could turn out to be Omicron infections. So far, the PCR test has been positive for 60 participants at the Christmas dinner.
