  • All groups except the extreme right join a new agreement that shields funding and the union of forces against attacks against women

  • The President of the Government will attend the signing of the opinion by the parliamentary spokespersons

All parliamentary groups, except Vox, will sign this afternoon the renewal of the state pact against gender violence. The current agreement, initialed in 2017, expires in September 2022 and the Government has been looking for a new agreement for several weeks that protects the financing and the union of forces in the fight against aggressions towards women. The agreement comes on a symbolic date, since this Thursday is the International Day Against Sexist Violence.

The president of the Government, Pedro Sanchez, accompanied by the Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, will attend this afternoon the signing ceremony of the agreement on the opinion which serves as the basis for renewing the covenant. And it will be the parliamentary spokespersons who sign it.

The agreement has been joined by Popular Party despite the fact that the formation led by Pablo Casado does not agree with many of the initiatives of the coalition government on equality. For example, he presented a amendment to the whole to the law of comprehensive guarantee of sexual freedom, known as the ‘only yes is yes’ law, and another to the norm that penalizes harassment in abortion clinics. Although, the Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, has indicated this morning that the PP was “in a position” to join a pact that fundamentally signs that the fight against violent machismo is the responsibility of the State.

One of the novelties of the new agreement is that feminist organizations that provide support services to victims of sexist violence will receive 1% of the budget. This commitment was not included in the pact that was signed in 2017 in both Congress and the Senate. On that occasion, the agreement was the result of intense negotiations within the two legislative chambers, preceded by the appearance of multiple experts. As a result, in September 2017 two reports were approved, without any vote against and with the abstention of Podemos because it considers it insufficient, that, in the case of Congress, contained 214 recommendations, and in the Senate, 267 measures to fight against sexist violence in multiple areas.

The Government Delegation for Gender Violence has been in charge of coordinating and promoting the implementation of these measures, for which a single document was prepared that consolidates all the recommendations, with a total of 292 measures structured in 10 lines of action. And, according to sources in the Delegation, 83% of them are completed or in the execution phase and 17% are pending.
