Chilean health authorities show concern about a new rise in Covid-19 cases

A sustained increase in coronavirus infections in the last weeks in Chile it keeps the government on alert due to the decrease in risk perception among the population amid the massive and rapid vaccination campaign, health authorities said on Thursday.

Among the causes of the new advance, the authorities pointed to the relaxation of the restrictions, which has allowed greater mobility and non-compliance with basic standards of care such as the use of face masks, hand washing, among others.

“We are concerned about the situation, obviously,” said the Minister of Health, Enrique Paris.

For its part, the undersecretary Paula Daza He said that agents in charge of monitoring compliance with sanitary regulations have warned them that “the perception of risk in our country has been lost, that we are better off but that people are not respecting sanitary measures.”

Paris detailed that the Santiago Metropolitan Region it is the one that currently registers the highest incidence, with 76 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The northern and mining companies follow Antofagasta and Tarapacá.

On the other hand, the official stressed that in the country there are more than a million laggards who have not come to receive the third dose, or booster, launched by the government to guarantee a good level of antibodies.

To promote your fast vaccination campaign, the government established a “mobility pass” for people over 12 years of age that allows greater freedoms for various activities.

Chile has vaccinated 13.6 of its 19 million inhabitants, while more than 5.5 million have already received the booster.

On the other hand, Paris pointed out that of the total number of patients hospitalized in Intensive Care Units, 24% corresponds to Covid-19 patients.
