Grand River Hospital in Kitchener says 136 staff members and physicians have been placed on unpaid leave or had their privileges suspended after choosing not to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

The region’s largest hospital says this represents 3.2 percent of its staff, as 4,163 employees and doctors are fully vaccinated, while another 63 are partially vaccinated.

“While we are still reviewing some documents that arrived overnight, we anticipate 136 staff members and physicians will be placed on unpaid leave or their privileges suspended,” GRH Vice President Jennifer O’Brien stated Wednesday. at night.

“These team members will have until November 9, 2021 to provide proof of complete COVID-19 vaccination, at which point their hospital employment status will be reviewed and, without a valid medical reason not to receive the vaccine, they may face termination of employment. “

On September 1, the Waterloo region and Wellington County hospitals issued a joint announcement that staff, doctors, students, volunteers and contractors working at the institutions had until October 12 to get vaccinated. or they would be put on leave without pay.

On Monday, the other two area hospitals announced their layoffs, and Cambridge Memorial Hospital said it would place 51 staff members and doctors on unpaid leave.

This represented a small portion of the hospital’s employees, as 96.8 percent of the staff and doctors were fully vaccinated.

It was a similar story at St Mary’s General Hospital in Kitchener, as he said 98 percent of the staff are currently fully vaccinated, with some of the remaining having indicated that they will follow suit.

The hospital said about 30 staff members would be put on leave without pay.
